We're hiring: Research Fellow in Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing

UCL Energy Institute's Islands Laboratory are looking for a Research Fellow in Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing.

This is an opportunity to join UCL-Energy’s research staff as a core member of the UCL Islands Laboratory. The interdisciplinary laboratory invites applications in the general area of computer science.

The successful candidate will join the research group led by Prof Catalina Spataru and will contribute to projects with software development, visualisation and data processing, often in collaboration with industrial and academic partners.

The post holder will be responsible for software development, visualisation and apps of existing models, contribute to the development of new adaptable tools/models in the area of disaster risk reduction and resilience (e.g droughts, floods, heatwaves) and resource management, contributing to other multidisciplinary research when necessary (e.g energy markets, resource nexus), working in close collaboration with partners of a diverse, multi-disciplinary research consortium and industrial partners from four continents and nine countries.

The post holder will also contribute to the expansion of the Lab research portfolio and to scientific paper publications, contributing to grant applications; workshops and demonstrations; knowledge transfer.

The post has funding for 18 months in the first instance, further funding to support the post may be available.

About UCL Islands Laboratory
UCL Islands Lab explores new concepts and research on disasters risk reduction and resilience, climate change, circular economy, low carbon technologies and markets, business models and policy analysis. UCL Islands Lab expertise lies on dynamic models for energy systems, resource nexus, survey design and innovative data collection techniques, big data handling and visualization, business models, market models, environmental law and policies.

UCL Islands Laboratory is carrying out interdisciplinary research in governance of disasters risk reduction and resilience, resource nexus and allocation, climate change, often in collaboration with industry, governmental and international partners. UCL Islands Laboratory is active in several international research projects funded by the UKRI under the Belmont forum programme and BEIS under the UK-Canada fund scheme.

Key Requirements
Our ideal candidate will have a have a PhD degree, or be close to completion, or have commensurate experience in Computer Science or a related field; with a strong background in one or more of the following: machine learning (ML), Natural Language Processing (NLP), artificial intelligence (AI); competitive research record in NLP and/or Machine Learning and/or Software Engineering; practical experience with apps development; excellent programming skills (e.g. Phython, Java); experience in software development, use of visualisation tools, knowledge of neural network libraries; familiarity with semantic technologies (e.g graph models).
